PhD students 1st cohort

Raphael Stübe (born 1988) studied a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Münster from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2015 he completed a Master of Cultural Poetics and Comparative Studies as well as a Master of Education, majoring in German studies and history at the University of Münster and the Università degli Studi Roma Trè. During his studies he worked as an academic assistant in the German Studies Institute in Münster and was a research student in the DFG research training group ‘Literary Form’. After his studies were completed Raphael was employed as a research assistant to the chair held by Professor Andreas Blödorn. He was a PhD student at the ‘Romanticism as a Model’ research training group October 2015 through September 2018 and served as spokesperson for the PhD students. Since October 2018, he is scientific staff under Prof. Dr. Dirk von Petersdorff at the Institute for Germanistics at Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena. In November 2018, he submitted his PhD thesis.

Fallen Out of Time? Modelling Temporality in the Neoromantic Literature of the Early Modern Period

While an unworldly escapism that withdraws from an ‘accelerated’ modernity is often ascribed to the literature from the turn of the century, the Neoromantic texts from the period between 1890 and 1900 are characterised by the productive examination of the genuinely ‘modern’ phenomena of temporality and contingency. This work investigates for the first time the specific procedures and semantics of Neoromanticism that was firmly anchored in the contemporary discourse, interpreting it as a model moving beyond an ‘-ism’ by considering modern phenomena of contingency and acceleration using a textual voicing out of opportunities. A specific modelling of ‘time’ enables the constitution of a supposedly fairytale-like diegesis and establishes Neoromanticism as a popular text phenomenon of early modernism that can be demonstrated in prose texts by various authors. The first step, starting with youthful Vienna, is to develop a specific temporality model of Neoromanticism using short prose texts and critical voices from the turn of the century in order to illustrate in a second step the negotiations with Neoromanticism in the semiotically oriented text analyses of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Otto Julius Bierbaum and Johannes Schlaf, amongst others.
