PhD project
Paintings of Lovers. Representation of Emotions and Semantics of Love in Romantic Art (working title)
The dissertation examines the characteristics of depictions of love in German Romanticism. Specifically, it analyzes the pictorial types, motifs and structures by means of which love is visualized in the first half of the 19th century. The aim is to interpret Romantic depictions of love against the background of their historical premises. Therefor, it is necessary to incorporate historical and sociological research on contemporary concepts of emotion, models of love, and gender discourses into the art-historical case studies. The corpus of analysis includes works by Caspar David Friedrich, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Adrian Ludwig Richter, Louise Seidler and Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carolsfeld, among others.
